Ashley Spires’s Fairy Science has been shortlisted for the BC Chocolate Lily Young Readers’ Choice Awards for 2020-2021 in the picture books for ages kindergarten to 4th grade category. The award celebrates children’s authors and illustrators living in British Columbia and while congratulating these talented authors and illustrators, it also tries to encourage literacy for grade school children in British Columbia. This non-profit reader’s choice award will be read and voted upon by these children and the results of the winners will be announced next year around this time.

Elisa Chavarri’s next illustrated book, Sharuko: Peruvian Archaeologist Julio C. Tello has received 6 shining reviews, including three starred reviews from The Horn Book, Booklist, and School Library Journal. this biography of Peruvian archaeologist, Julio C. Tello, describes the history of his discoveries and Peru’s culture. Booklist praises “Chavarri’s gorgeous watercolor-and-gouache illustrations” saying they “bring to life Tello’s family, his ancestors, moments.” While Kirkus says the “artwork goes a long way toward giving a real sense of place to the narration.” Read the full reviews below.
