The last two weeks of February were full of snow much fun as Sarah Dillard’s I Wish It Would Snow, was showcased at the Mad River Glen Ski Area as the featured story for SkiStory. All the way down the mountain, pages from the book were hidden, allowing children to ski down the mountain safely, while also being able to enjoy the story. The first two books in Joanie Stone’s newly illustrated chapter book series, Kid and the Chameleon came out today. One little bunny had a big year! A Day In the Life of Marlon Bundo (Chronicle), illustrated by EG Keller made the #3 spot for the top selling hardback children’s books of 2018! 544,475 copies – over half a million! – were sold. Congratulations to Frank Morrison, illustrator of Let the Children March, which was chosen as a 2019 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book. Recipients of Coretta Scott King Awards and Honors are “outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. Vanessa Brantley Newton was featured front and center on the first CBC (Children’s Book Council) Diversity newsletter of the year, with a brilliant spotlight interview. In it, she discussed the inspiration behind her recent picture book Grandma’s Purse, as well as her process and what she feels readers should take away from the story. Vanessa highlights the “the joy and preciousness of the grandparent and grandchild relationship” and insists that “grandparents are not just old people,” encouraging young people to cherish their time with their elders as she did with her own grandmother.
