The beautiful artwork from Vanessa Brantley Newton’s We Shall Overcome and Molly Idle’s Flora and the Flamingo and Camp Rex, will be exhibited in the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show 2014. Molly was last exhibited in the Original Art Show in 2013, and this is Vanessa’s first exhibition.

Vanessa’s illustrated book We Shall Overcome was a winner of The Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards 2014. The award honors books that promote peace and justice. The book was called by Kirkus Reviews “a slice of musical Americana celebrating community protest against injustice,” brought to life by Vanessa’s captivating illustrations.
We Shall Overcome Selected as a Bank Street College Best Children’s Book of 2013!

Vanessa Brantley Newton’s illustrations appear in this nuanced and inspirational take on the Civil Rights Movement. The book was selected as one of the Best Children’s Book of 2013 by Bank Street College. Vanessa and the author of the book, Debbie Levy, recently appeared at the Gaithersburg Book Festival in Maryland. Click here to view the video.
