Congratulations to Josée Masse, who illustrated Thunder Underground, which is included in a column entitled “Children’s Literature Reviews: 2017 Notable Poetry Books for Children” that appears in the July issue of the NCTE journal, Language Arts. While inclusion on this list is an honor in itself, there’s also a lovely description of the book provided, which highlights Masse’s artistic contribution to the project. The author remarks that “Josée Masse’s mixed-media illustrations offer a visual adventure, including colorful cross-sections of what lies underground. Notably, Masse chooses to feature a boy and girl of different races across most of the scenes in this poetic journey.” Featuring poetry by Jane Yolen, this picture book takes young readers on an unforgettable expedition you won’t want to miss out on.

The book was featured in the “Children’s Poetry” category, and is a thought-provoking collection of poems that teaches kids about the mysterious world underneath us through science, adventure and poetry.

The book appears on the Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Awards master list, which you can find here, and is also a 2018 Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards finalist, which was announced here. These book recommendations come from a company that prides itself on providing high-quality library and classroom materials to PK-12 schools and public libraries around the world. Tracey L., who has worked at Mackin for 13 years, recently compiled a list of her favorite nonfiction books of 2017, which includes Thunder Underground, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Josée Masse. The NYPL’s List of Best Books for Kids 2017 Includes Five Books From Our Artists/Authors

The New York Public Library recently released a selection of their favorite kids books of the year. They call every book on this list “outstanding.” Five of the books included on their extensive list were written or illustrated by one of Painted Words’s authors or artists!

Thunder Underground Praised in Blog Post on Books That Explore Science Through Poetry

The blog Archimedes Notebook helps children and parents find books for children that focus on science and environmental issues. Archimedes Notebook recently posted a blog post on picture books that explore science through the medium of poetry. One of the books the post praised is Thunder Underground, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Josée Masse.
Thunder Underground explores the concept of the varied things that exist under our feet, from ant colonies to subway lines. Archimedes praised the way the story incorporates a variety of unique aspects of nature as well as the factual back matter.

Thunder Underground, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Josée Masse, is receiving a ton of great advance buzz, including a recent starred review from Publishers Weekly! Thunder Underground is a collection of factual and whimsical poems about the mysteries hidden underground, ranging from ant colonies to hidden treasure. Publishers Weekly writes, “Blending creativity with scientific fact, Yolen’s poems appeal to readers’ imaginations and intellects alike.” They praised Josée’s, “crisp, gently textured mixed-media illustrations.”

Advance Review of Thunder Underground, Illus. by Josée Masse, from Booklist

Forthcoming picture book, Thunder Underground, is a collection of poems written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Josée Masse detailing the various activities and objects that exist underground, ranging from buried treasure to burrowing creatures to the subway. Booklist recently wrote a great advance review of the picture book. They describe Thunder Underground as a “thoughtful collection” and praised Yolen’s “vivid” poems. They wrote of Josée’s illustrations that, ” Masse’s drawings of a boy and girl tell stories on their own…The warm, naturalistic illustrations of underground scenes and cutaways often contain an element of charming whimsy.”

Thunder Underground, the upcoming picture book written by acclaimed author Jane Yolen and illustrated by Josée Masse, is a collection of poems centering on the idea of what lies underneath our feet, underground. This unique idea takes its main characters and the reader on a poetic adventure through the earth and the things hidden there, ranging from animals to hidden pirate treasure.
Kirkus recently reviewed Thunder Underground with high praise and a starred review. They called the picture book, “A thoughtful exploration of nature expressed in poetry that should open the eyes of children to unseen worlds,” and they wrote of Josée’s art that, “Masse’s mixed-media illustrations portray the imaginary points of view with aplomb.”
